Product Description

Starshine- Constellations

A group of stars that form a pattern in the night sky is a constellation.  Astronomers use constellations to identify areas in the night sky and locate objects.  The International Astronomical Unit has officially recognized 88 constellations covering the entire sky in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.  A few constellations can be seen all year round but most are only seasonal and can only be seen at certain times of the year.  In the past, farmers would use the constellations to help them know when to plant their crops and sailors used them to navigate their boats across the sea.

In the “Starshine- Constellations” activity students will:

  • Observe stars in groups or observable patterns (constellations) and identify them
  • Construct their own constellation from randomly distributed stars, using materials provided with the activity
  • Create a Star Gazer book identifying common constellations

Students receive their own materials to create a constellation.   Activity sheets are provided for the student to create a Star Gazer book to help them identify constellations.

The Teacher’s Guide provides background information the Sun, (our closest star) and additional topics for discussion about stars and constellations.
